The body works like a car

There are five gears in a car. Gears one and two are quick explosive bursts, they burn rocket fuel. Gears four and five are cruise control, they burn clean renewable energy.

The problem with gears one and two are the fuel - carbohydrates. The energy is there quickly but at a cost. You don't get as much bang for your buck.

Gears four and five use your forever fuel - fats. The process needs oxygen to metabolise the fuel to energy. Breathe. The energy takes a while to arrive but at huge benefit. You get MORE of it.

Gear three assists the passage between the two fuel systems. Imagine two circles which overlap on the fringe. The overlapping zone is gear three. DO NOT get stuck here EVERY run. It's no man's land for fuel. Aim at the bullseye of each circle. Each fuel system learns to work more efficiently there. That means you can run FASTER in your FOREVER gear on RENEWABLES.

How do you work out your gears? HEART RATE ZONES. Let's generalise here for the sake of clarity. Zone 1-2 (120-140bpm) is comparable to gear 4-5. Zone 4-5 (160-180bpm) is comparable to gear 1-2. In between is no-man's land.

If I had one piece of advice to pass on to NEW runners or my former SELF it would be this. Run easy runs TRULY easy so you can run hard runs hard. The temptation when you put your shoes on is to run somewhere in between. Running SLOW takes DISCIPLINE.

Use rocket fuel and renewable energy. Both systems need the work. BUT train them at their CORE.
